Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at fofcommittee@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Wilmington, Massachusetts, has a rich tradition of celebrating Independence Day that began in 1981 with the formation of the Fourth of July Committee. This committee was established to continue the family-friendly atmosphere created during the town's 250th Anniversary Celebration. Over the years, the committee's efforts have transformed the celebration into one of the largest Fourth of July events in Massachusetts.

The festivities, known as "Fun on the Fourth," have evolved from modest beginnings with a few civic organizations participating to a multi-day event that includes a carnival, concerts, a road race, a parade, and a spectacular fireworks display. These activities foster community spirit and attract visitors from surrounding areas.

A notable feature of the celebration is the Fourth of July Building, which serves as the event's headquarters. Originally constructed as a schoolhouse, the building became the town library in 1889. In the 1970s, it functioned as a school department annex, and in 1982, it was repurposed as the headquarters for the Fourth of July Committee. This historic building stands as a testament to Wilmington's commitment to preserving its heritage while fostering community engagement.

The Wilmington Fourth of July Committee operates as a private organization, independent of the town government. It is dedicated to organizing events that unite residents and celebrate the nation's independence. The committee's initiatives have become integral to Wilmington's identity, contributing to the town's reputation as a vibrant and community-oriented place to live.

Wilmington's Fun on the 4th is held at on and around the town common. Use 142 Middlesex Ave in your navigation settings.
